New Carmakers Face Questions Over Vehicle Repairability
As new automotive brands gain ground in Europe, long-term repairability is emerging as a concern. A study by Via ID, Mobivia’s investment arm, finds that many models from Tesla, BYD, and others prioritize cost and integration over ease of repair. Batteries alone can account for up to 40% of a vehicle’s value, and designs such as cell-to-chassis or giga-casting complicate repairs. Limited access to data, software, and spare parts further raises ownership costs, potentially making some low-cost EVs expensive or even disposable over their lifetime.
