Europe’s Auto Transition Faces Social and Industrial Strains
Europe’s shift to electric vehicles is taking a heavy social toll. Between 2024 and 2025, suppliers cut 104,000 jobs while creating just 7,000, and total vehicle production remains 20% below 2019 levels despite a 23% rise in EV output. To protect jobs and reduce dependence on Asia, suppliers are urging policymakers to define a “European car” with at least 80% local content for vehicles assembled in Europe.
